Roam: Island adventures for pets too, in Honolulu

Hawaii is a bucket list destination, so why not include your fur baby when taking the big trip? Eat, play, and relax with pup in tow when visiting dog-friendly Honolulu.

Roam: Island adventures for pets too, in Honolulu

Hawaii is a bucket list destination, so why not include your fur baby when taking the big trip? It’s easier than you think to eat, play, and lodge with pup in tow when visiting very dog-friendly Honolulu. Hiking trails galore, island eateries, and posh hotels await to accommodate. Tell the doggy daycare you’ll see them some other time, because this dream vacation includes Fido, too.

Delicious Island Places to Eat with Your Dog

Nico’s at Pier 38 checks off the main criteria we look for in a place to eat in Hawaii. Seafood dominates the locally sourced menu, and a fresh fish market is actually onsite, too. Of course, we wouldn’t be talking about this if it weren’t a dog-friendly place, and even better, the patio overlooks the vibrant blue waters.

REAL Gastropub is known for a vast selection of craft beer and allowing pups inside and out of their facility—it’s just a fun time for man and best friend. The food is out of this world with creative pub concoctions displaying Hawaiian flair. Deviled eggs with IPA aioli, smoked meats with onion and guava, maple glazed bacon—hungry yet?

Mimi’s Place is a “must visit” not just because they have ample seating for furry friends outdoors, but the Peruvian cuisine is strikingly memorable through its fresh local flavors. Even the meats used in each dish are often sourced from nearby farms. Mimi’s is a low-key culinary gem in Honolulu.

Barefoot Beach Café reflects everything chill about Hawaii—folks and pups come here to lounge water side on the large patio, while enjoying fusion dishes like the famed Surfer Rice and tuna poke bowls. More American staples like steak are on the menu, but come on, who can resist garlic shrimp?

Where to Cuddle with Your Furry Friend After Long Beach Days

Best Western Plaza Hotel does have a proximal potty place for pups, and they are allowed to stay in the room if you bring their crate along. Cats are welcome, too! Best Western is a great budget option, and it’s nice to know what to expect thanks to consistency among chain hotels. Be sure to call ahead, as there are limited pet-friendly rooms.

The Laylow Autograph Collection is all around beautiful and luxurious, while also welcoming bigger dogs than most establishments. Cats and dogs can stay unattended, while crated, in the rooms if need be. Grassy pet relief stations are onsite.

Hotel Renew is one of the 52 hotels that allows dogs to stay with their owners. While there are a few restrictions (they can’t stay in rooms unattended and designated potty areas are a short walk away), the hotel gives each baby a warm welcome. We are talking water bowls, treats and fluffy beds.

Keep in mind that over 250 Airbnb listings in Honolulu allow pets. Airbnbs are excellent when looking for somewhere with uniqueness, privacy and affordability.

Where to Have a Memorable Day Out

Ka lwi Scenic Shoreline features a jaw-dropping two-mile hike, but make sure you have your dog on leash. This is one of the best places to enjoy the landscape with your four-legged companion. From January to March, the possibility of seeing whales in the water is highly likely.

Hawaii Kai Dog Park is one of the several dog parks available in the area. The stretch of green terrain is just a simple, well maintained place to let your pup run until his or her heart is content. You’ll find extra perks like drinking fountains and a separate portion for small fur babies.

Don’t get us wrong, we love dog parks, but in Honolulu, there is far more to explore beyond fence borders.

Surfer and dog walking on Hawaiian beach

Hawaii Surf Dogs, believe it or not, provides wave treading lessons for you and your dog. Make sure you’ve both become comfortable with the water before embarking on this adventure—paddle boarding is an option, too.

What’s a trip to Hawaii without lots of beach time? Kailua Beach Park welcomes dogs amongst the sugary sand and picturesque yet very gentle ocean waves. The park is kept impeccably clean thanks to dedicated owners and solid rules that keep it beautiful for everyone.

This barely touches the surface of what’s available to those traveling to Honolulu with pets—a lengthy list of more accommodating restaurants, parks, trails and hotels exist. But this should give you an idea of how to start planning your ultimate island getaway.

Karyn Wofford is a “Mom” to her fluffy, sweet dog Halli. She spends much of her time traveling and advocating for Type 1 diabetes—and Halli sometimes accompanies her on her adventures. You’ll find Karyn’s work on sites like Mother Earth Living, and in magazines such as Diabetes Forecast.
