Yes, This Gourmet Peanut Butter Is for Dogs (and Humans, Too!)
By: Lizz CaputoWag Butter is all the rage lately. But what makes this pet-friendly spread a hit among both pets and their parents?
You're cruising through the grocery aisles and you spot it – a jar labeled "Wag Butter." Your eyes are drawn to the cute label (but also to the $9 price tag). You know that not all pet products are created equal. So, is this fancy-sounding nut butter worth wagging about? Let's dive in!
Wag Butter is a new player on the pet food scene, and it's the brainchild of the folks over at Big Spoon Roasters. They're pretty passionate about making foods that are not just good, but also good for you (and your pet!).
So what exactly is Wag Butter? Simply put, each flavor of Wag Butter is a blend of peanut butter and other mouthwatering ingredients that dogs love. Currently, there are three flavors in production: Banana Flax (great for shiny coats), Coconut Chia, and Pumpkin Spice.
But here's the deal – and what makes Wag Butter really cool – it's not just for dogs. It's for humans too. Yes, you read that right. It's a peanut butter that you and your pooch can share.
It's free from xylitol, the sweetener found in some peanut butters that's safe for humans but toxic to dogs. It's also salt-free, because sodium in even small amounts can be not so good for your curious copilot. Sure, PB without the salt sounds a bit odd, but the taste testers at Bon Appetit said they didn't miss a thing - and neither did we! So, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy a PB&J with your furry friend without the worry.
It's all sounding pretty good, right? But the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Or in this case, the proof of the peanut butter is in the...licking?
So, let's hand it over to our resident food critic, Greta, my 11-year-old American Bully. Greta's pretty discerning for a dog. She's not just going to eat anything (though she does have a thing for half-eaten chicken wings on the sidewalk...)
Greta devoured the banana flavor up as soon as the spoon was within tongue's reach. With eyes as wide her favorite Kong she was more than happy to lap it up when spread on a lick mat, too. The pumpkin spice was also enjoyed, but she wasn't AS enthusiastic as she was about banana.
For her final taste test, she tried the coconut chia. Coconut oil is great for your dog's coat, and I had experimented with it before so I had a feeling Greta would find this flavor to be paw-licking good. And what do you know, the whole spoonful was gone before I could say "sit!"
And now my favorite part - I did my own taste test of the three flavors.
Banana Flax Wag Butter: This velvety spread marries the subtle sweetness of bananas with the nutty richness of flax. I was pretty bananas for this flavor. It was easily my favorite of the three and I didn't miss the saltiness at all!
Pumpkin Spice Wag Butter: A comforting combination of warm pumpkin spices mixed with the creamy nuttiness of peanut butter; like autumn in a jar. I liked this one a lot but would probably pick my resident jar of Skippy first.
Coconut Chia Wag Butter: Imagine tropical, creamy coconut paired with the crunchiness of chia seeds, all blended into peanut butter - it's a texture and flavor that coconut lovers will enjoy. I'm not the biggest coconut fan, so this one was a pass for me. But hey, Greta won't mind finishing the jar.
So there you have it, straight from the dog's mouth. Wag Butter: it's a hit in the canine and human world.
Next time you're perusing those grocery store aisles, you might want to grab a jar. Just remember to save some for your soulful sidekick.
